How do Half Lives Relate to NORM: Awareness & NORM: Survey Work?

To determine how much of a radioactive substance is in the body at a given time, the effective half-life must be determined. The effective half-life combines the effects of both an element's natural half-life and the biological half-life. It is important to note, however, that the biological and effective half-lives of NORM only apply when NORM is inhaled or ingested. Simply being exposed to NORM is not the same as contamination. The actual dose amount that was inhaled or ingested is the more important measure. Make sure to keep this in mind as you work on potentially dangerous materials.
