What Are the Steps to Survive an Emergency?

The seven steps to survival are:

  1. Recognition. Understand the emergency.
  2. Inventory. Account for personnel first, then for equipment and supplies.
  3. Shelter. Determine the safest location, whether it be the vessel, survival craft, or muster area.
  4. Signals. Use devices that can alert others, like radios, phones, beacons, or flares.
  5. Water. Ensure an adequate supply of fresh water.
  6. Food. Ration if necessary.
  7. Play. Prevent panic and keep focused with jokes, games, singing, or other forms of amusement.
