What Effects Does Electricity Have on the Body?

Electricity can have various effects on the body. It can cause external damage, usually burns. There are three degrees of burns. First-degree burns only affect the outer layer of skin. Second-degree burns affect the first and second layers. Third degree burns are the most serious, and cause permanent tissue damage.

Health effects are often associated with internal damage to the body. Acute health effects are the results of a single exposure to a hazard. An electric shock with high enough amperage can cause severely abnormal heart rhythm and cardiac arrest.

Chronic effects refer to those long-term effects that are the result of multiple exposures. Neurological problems, such as short-term memory loss, are often the result of chronic electrical exposure.
