What Are the Common Workplace Hazards of Drug and Alcohol Use?

The use and abuse of drugs and alcohol create serious problems both inside and outside of the workplace. The National Institute for Drug Abuse identifies drug and alcohol use as the most preventable cause of accidents in the workplace.

Drugs and alcohol, commonly referred to as substances, can pose serious hazards to both the user, and to others. Even casual use of substances can create risks, including impaired reaction time, unstable emotional states, poor coordination, drowsiness, or hyperactivity.

All of these effects heighten the risk of injury to both the user and all those around him. Substance abuse can lead to a severe decline in both mental and physical health.
