Dealing With Affected Employees and the Employee Assistance Program (EAP)

If an employee exhibits signs of affected performance, never intervene with the employee and never try to diagnose the problem.

Document any observable evidence of affected performance, and report all evidence to your supervisor. Also, never cover for an employee, this only enables the problem.

The employee assistance program (EAP) is designed to help workers and their families with issues. The program offers confidential counseling and assistance for problems including substance use, abuse, and other issues such as stress or depression.

Both employees and their families may utilize the program at any time, except after a policy violation occurs, and usually after being selected for a drug screening or search.

Employee assistance programs can help employees lead a substance-free lifestyle which help to improve their mental and physical health.
