What are the Causes of Back Injuries?

Back injuries are one of the most common workplace injuries. According to the Occupational safety and health administration, OSHA, over 1 million workers suffer back injuries each year, which accounts for 20% of all workplace injuries.

Back injuries are often self-inflicted, and cumulative. Most injuries are the result of unnecessary, yet repeated damage over time. Improper lifting techniques account for 75% of all back injuries. Some of the most common are twisting at the waist, reaching above or across something, and bending over, which can put as much as ten times the weight of the object on your spine.

Other causes of back injuries include lifting heavy or odd-shaped objects without help, pushing or pulling heavy loads incorrectly, slips, trips, and falls, poor posture, poor physical condition, and working in awkward or uncomfortable positions.
