How Do I Prevent Back Injuries?

A proactive approach to back safety reduces the risk of an injury. This includes practicing safe lifting techniques, using proper procedures for heavy or odd-shaped objects, pushing and pulling correctly, practicing good posture, maintaining good physical health, and employing ergonomics.

Before lifting an object, know the weight of object, know your personal limit, and know the company limit, or how much weight you are allowed to lift by your employer. If you determine that an object is too heavy to lift, find someone to help you, or use material-handling equipment.

Another preventive measure is to employ ergonomics in the workplace. This means designing and arranging things you use in a safer and more efficient way.
